When does it make sense for companies to employ students?
Not every task that piles up within a company immediately justifies creating a new full-time post. Nevertheless, it takes up time – and qualified staff often end up taking on work that is not even required as part of their actual remit. This is precisely where student support can be useful.

Students are well suited to practically any task that does not require specific, long-term professional experience. This could be a one-off assignment, regular support for a few hours a week, or involvement in longer-term projects.
In an office setting, for example, students can assist with research, data entry, digitisation, preparing for meetings or maintaining records. In retail, catering and logistics, tasks such as stock management, stock-taking, order picking, customer service or helping to meet seasonal peaks in demand are suitable. At events, students can help with set-up, at the entrance, looking after guests or with the follow-up evaluation.
Even more demanding tasks can be effectively carried out by students if their field of study and skills match the requirements. These include, for example:
* Support with social media and content creation
* Researching and compiling specialist information
* Maintaining websites and databases
* Software development and simple programming tasks
* Support with architectural, construction or engineering projects
Of course, not every student automatically possesses every desired skill. The more precisely you describe the required knowledge, the more effectively STAV can select suitable students, thereby minimising your effort by only placing candidates who meet your requirements.
More time for your core business
The biggest benefit often lies not just in the extra work that gets done. Student support can ensure that your existing team has more time to focus on their core tasks. When a project manager has to regularly transfer data, a specialist has to sort event documents, or senior management has to enter data into spreadsheets themselves, valuable working time is tied up. Such tasks do not simply disappear – but they can be usefully delegated far more often than one might think.
Student support is therefore particularly worthwhile if you recognise any of the following statements:
* “Someone really ought to find the time for this.”
* “It’s actually an important task, but it always gets left undone.”
* “There isn’t enough work to justify a full-time role.”
* “We’ll need significantly more support over the next few weeks.”
Sometimes, just a few hours a week are enough to make a noticeable difference.
Gaining flexibility and future skilled workers
Students can do more than just fill short-term gaps. A longer-term collaboration offers both sides the opportunity to perhaps even discuss the prospect of a permanent role after graduation.
For companies, this can lead to early contact with potential future skilled workers. Students get to know your company, your working methods and your sector. At the same time, as an employer, you can see in day-to-day working life how reliably the collaboration works and what skills the person actually possesses.
This is no guarantee of a future job offer – but it provides a far more realistic basis than a single job interview. Particularly for smaller companies, which are less well known to graduates than large corporations, a good student job can be an effective way of attracting future skilled workers.
